Bernard “Bud” Hammes, PhD, ethics consultant, director of Medical Humanities, and director of Respecting Choices, Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation.

Dr. Hammes came to the clinical setting with a doctorate in philosophy in 1984. Since that time, he has been providing ethics education, consultation, and advance care planning education to the medical staff, house staff, medical students, nurses, social workers and chaplains. His work has focused primarily on improving end-of-life care at Gundersen Lutheran Health System and in the La Crosse, Wisconsin community. He is the chair of both the institutional ethics committee and institutional review board. Dr. Hammes has led the development of two successful, award-winning advance care planning programs: “If I Only Knew…” and “Respecting Choices.” In addition, he has published 33 articles and book chapters about end-of-life issues.

Linda Briggs, RN, MSN, MA, ethics consultant and assistant director of Respecting Choices¨, Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation.

With 25 years of nursing experience as a critical care staff nurse, nurse manager, clinical nurse specialist and educator, Ms. Briggs brings extensive insight to clinical and educational perspectives related to healthcare ethics. She received her master of science in bioethics and has published her thesis “A Competency Based Educational Curriculum for Ethics Committee Members” and is co-author of Respecting Choices Advance Care Planning Manual for Facilitators. She provides education and consultation to individuals and organizations interested in implementing the nationally recognized Respecting Choices¨ Advance Care Planning Program. In her role as an ethics consultant, she facilitates the development of several ethics committees statewide.
